Satbayev University, officially known as the Kazakh National Research Technical University, is Kazakhstan’s foremost institution for technical education. When the university was established, its primary focus was on producing skilled engineers to meet the demands of Kazakhstan's burgeoning industrial sector. As the country grew, so did the university’s scope and influence.

By focusing on high-impact research, Satbayev University aims to solidify its position as a research leader in Central Asia.

Partnerships are a cornerstone of Satbayev University’s strategy to enhance educational quality, advance research, and provide students with global exposure. The university has established collaborations with leading institutions and organizations around the world.

  • Academic Collaborations: Partnerships with globally renowned universities such as Penn State University, City University of Hong Kong, University of Exeter, Sungkyunkwan University, University of Glasgow and Hof Institute enable joint research projects, dual-degree programs, and faculty exchanges. For instance, collaborations with Korean universities focus on robotics and industrial automation, while partnerships in UK emphasize renewable energy technologies.
  • Industry Partnerships: Collaborations with global corporations such as Chevron, Kazatomprom, Schlumberger, Yandex, Porsche, Hyundai and Siemens provide students with access to cutting-edge technologies and real-world problem-solving experiences. These partnerships also play a crucial role in aligning the university’s curriculum with industry needs.
  • Government and Regional Alliances: Domestically, Satbayev University works closely with government agencies and regional industries to address national priorities such as energy security, sustainable mining, and water resource management.

QS: Some readers may be familiar with Satbayev University from QS-GEN, which has featured some of the institution’s breakthroughs in water purification, for example. What other areas of research are a focus?

Research is a core pillar of Satbayev University’s mission, and the institution is proud to contribute to solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges. While water purification has been a notable success, the university is also actively engaged in the following research areas:

  1. Renewable Energy: Developing efficient and cost-effective solar, wind, and bioenergy technologies to support the global transition to clean energy.
  2. Artificial Intelligence: Creating AI solutions for industrial automation, healthcare diagnostics, and urban planning with focus on advancing Kazakh language AI solutions.
  3. Space Technologies: Collaborating with international partners on satellite design and exploration technologies to position Kazakhstan as a leader in space innovation.
  4. Mineral Processing: Advancing sustainable methods for resource extraction and utilization, critical for Kazakhstan’s mining-based economy. One of such examples is our Selenium purification project, that allowed national mining companies to produce chemically pure selenium for export purposes. Moreover, whole pipeline was developed to use locally manufactured equipment.

5. Smart Cities: Innovating technologies for urban sustainability, including smart grids, intelligent transportation, and eco-friendly construction materials.

  3. Strengthening Industry Ties: Increasing the number of internships, cooperative education programs, and joint projects with industry partners to better prepare students for the workforce.
