The Lens
QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026
The choice of where to study is one of the most significant decisions a student will ever make. While part of the QS University Rankings focuses on institutional performance globally and regionally, the QS World University Rankings by Subject supports the student journey by providing a definitive map of academic excellence across multiple fields of study.
By evaluating institutions not just on their overall recognition, but on their specific strengths within the disciplines that matter most to students, we offer an additional granular view of the higher education landscape.
Methodology
First, the key to understanding the QS Subject Rankings lies on unpacking the methodology. We do not rank individual courses or programmes; instead, we evaluate an institution’s overall academic offering across 55 Narrow Subjects grouped in the five broad Faculty Areas of Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management.

This ranking project is built upon five core indicators, each weighted differently, depending on the subject, to reflect the unique priorities of that field:
- Academic Reputation: Measures the global academic community’s perception of one institution.
- Employer Reputation: Evaluates how successful institutions are at preparing students for the workforce.
- Citations per Paper: Focuses on the impact and quality of scientific work.
- H-Index: Measures both the productivity and the impact of an institution’s published work.
- International Research Network: Assesses an institution’s ability to sustain diverse and rich research partnerships across borders.
