Healing an Underserved Community: The Youth Medical Mission in Muynak

By Anshaj Ahuja, QS ImpACT

In Muynak, Uzbekistan, the legacy of the Aral Sea crisis is still felt in daily life. Once a thriving fishing hub and the country's only port city, the region has experienced decades of ecological decline that have shaped local livelihoods and created serious, lasting public health challenges.

For Marlen Ibragimov, this situation called for action.

Recognised as the 2025 QS ImpACT Community Health & Wellbeing Award recipient, he organised a charity medical trip to Muynak, bringing free medical consultations and preventive health education directly to residents.

Healthcare where it's needed most

Healthcare access in Muynak is shaped by both geography and the region's environmental history. The Aral Sea crisis left behind heavily polluted land and serious public health consequences that continue to affect residents today. For many in the community, access to consistent medical services remains limited.

Marlen's initiative addressed this gap directly. By organising a structured medical outreach trip, the programme brought basic health services to community members who may otherwise have gone without.

More than 50 residents received free medical check-ups during the visit. Children, adults and elderly residents all attended, reflecting the broad reach of the programme across the community.

More than a check-up

Alongside the consultations, Marlen ensured the programme went beyond treatment.

Over 70 community members participated in preventive health education sessions, covering early identification of common health conditions, practical approaches to maintaining family well-being, and everyday preventive care practices.

By combining hands-on consultations with structured education, the initiative aimed to equip residents not just with immediate care but with the knowledge to better manage their health going forward.

Youth leadership in action

Marlen's initiative demonstrates how community-driven, youth-led efforts can meaningfully support local healthcare access, even in areas facing significant structural challenges.

In a region where health infrastructure has long needed support, targeted outreach of this kind offers a practical, replicable model for other youth leaders looking to make a direct impact.

Recognition and what comes next

The charity medical trip to Muynak highlights what becomes possible when young people take direct responsibility for the well-being of their communities.

By reaching residents across age groups, combining treatment with education, and addressing one of Uzbekistan's most underserved regions, the initiative contributed to improving awareness of preventive health practices at the community level.

The 2025 Community Health & Wellbeing Award recognised this work. Through platforms like QS ImpACT, it can now inspire others facing similar challenges in their own communities.
