While universities face mounting pressure to demonstrate the economic value of degrees, students are also looking for education that is meaningful as well as useful.

At the Louis Vuitton atelier in Asnières-sur-Seine, just outside Paris, around 250 artisans make some of the design house’s products on site. This romanticised scene offers reassurance amid growing anxiety over artificial intelligence and its impact on creative work.

“You see these people making the handbags and recognise the incredible value of something handmade,” says Caroline Collet, Director of Maison/0, the regenerative luxury platform established by both Central Saint Martins UAL (CSM) and Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH).

There are some forms of creativity, she suggests, that technology cannot replicate: the skill of a craftsperson, the act of designing and the cultural value they accumulate. For universities, this poses a broader question: how can education preserve what is meaningful about learning while also giving students the practical experience they need beyond graduation?

Increasingly, the answer is being found in partnerships with industry.

Reconciling creativity and sustainability

As Professor of Design for Sustainable Futures at CSM, Collet explains how the relationship with LVMH came to fruition.

The partnership was established in 2017 and has since grown stronger, with a recent renewal extending it to 2031.

“I think it’s because it’s a natural fit — we work well together, we learn from each other, and I think that’s really important. We are not servicing an industry — it’s a collaboration,” Professor Collet says.

In 2021, the partnership shifted beyond sustainability towards regenerative luxury, centred on a question: how can creative practice help regenerate ecosystems and climate? The ‘0’ in its name, Maison/0, signals that reset through five pillars: LVMH scholarships, R&D for Life, a challenge fund, a disruptive curriculum and student awards.

Creative innovation in practice

The partnership’s impact is not confined to the classroom. One of LVMH’s most direct interventions is its investment in students.

“They fully fund four scholars every year — the students are mentored by LVMH professionals, fostering a deep integration without any strings attached requiring them to work for the company after graduation,” Professor Collet says.

LVMH also finances two awards for final year students. The Green Trail Award celebrates projects that respond to the climate and biodiversity emergency through regenerative design, and the This Earth Award focuses on artistic practice that contributes to nature and sustainability. £5,000 is awarded to winners and £1,000 to runners-up.

The relationship also extends beyond into research, with professors working alongside industry and local communities.

Professor Collet is currently developing a methodology with UNESCO and LVMH within two UNESCO-designated biosphere reserves in the Bolivian Amazon, working with local craftspeople, social scientists and agroecologists on projects ranging from traditional weaving to the use of locally recovered plastic in new products.

As Professor Collet puts it, “We’ve been training them; we introduced them to premium stores in Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia. It has been rewarding to open new markets to communities who live in the middle of the Amazon who have craft techniques but don’t know how to value it.”

A partnership with roots

The University of California, Davis is also working closely with industry to create unique learning experiences.

Situated amid the rolling vineyards of California’s Napa Valley, the Department of Viticulture (grapevines) and Enology (winemaking) oversees Oakville Station — a 40-acre site comprising a laboratory, research facilities and two vineyards.

The land was gifted to the university in 1954 by the US Department of Agriculture for research, providing the foundations for a hands-on education.

Over the years, the department has received about US$20 million in investment from its industry network, helping to build its on-campus winery, while donors have contributed approximately $500,000 to scholarships. Prominent names in the wine world, including Robert Mondavi, Jerry Lohr and Jackson Family Wines, have also supported its development.

Ben Montpetit, Professor and Department Chair, is keen to emphasise that the department's relationship with industry is not simply about funding. Its longevity reflects the value of the discipline.

The department's history can be traced back to 1880, and its four-year undergraduate and two-year master's programmes combine science with the practical, cultural and commercial dimensions of wine.

“It is a crop that is made into something of greater value,” says Professor Montpetit. “Not only do humans like it, but it has cultural significance, a place with food and community and all of those things together.”

The curriculum is largely STEM-focused, covering soil science, microbiology, pests and disease and the wider ecosystem of the vineyard. Students also study sensory science, exploring how humans interact with wine through taste and smell.

Bridging passion and practicality

The practical side of the course is equally important.

“We even have a tractor driving course that teaches how to operate heavy agricultural equipment in the vineyard,” Professor Montpetit points out. It’s this combination of technical knowledge and hands-on experience that can turn an academic interest into something students can imagine pursuing professionally.

The department even attracts students whose interest in the subject comes from unexpected directions. Professor Montpetit recalls one philosophy student who entered the master's programme after taking additional community college courses to meet the prerequisites.

For him, such examples illustrate a continued interest in viticulture. In the US, students cannot even legally drink alcohol until they are 21.

“Students have identified grape growing and winemaking as an interest at 18,” Professor Montpetit explains. “They are incredibly passionate about food, culture and agriculture — but not because it’s alcohol.”

He also points to T.J. Rodgers, billionaire and former CEO of Cypress Semiconductor, as one of the department's key supporters.

“He understands the importance of tech, made a fortune in it, but also loves wine.”

It bodes well for the department, as their ambition is to develop the world's most technologically advanced and sustainable wineries.

It’s a process

“People in the wine industry face challenges and need solutions now,” Professor Montpetit says.

“We work with many people with many different priorities. Everyone has a different focus area, which can be a little bit challenging.”

The department can also feel the effects when businesses experience downturns. Maintaining productive relationships therefore requires more than asking companies to provide money or resources.

“The key is really understanding stakeholder needs, listening and talking to them — the education goes both ways,” Professor Montpetit explains.

“You can’t just go out there and tell people what you want to do and expect to receive money.”

The value of an industry partnership is not measured solely by the size of the cheque. It lies in whether universities and businesses can bring different forms of knowledge to the same concerns.

Bringing the humanities into practice

While industry partnerships come naturally to disciplines with an obvious professional application, in the humanities, this approach becomes more complicated — but not impossible.

QS Insights spoke with Steve Choe, Associate Professor and Programme Director of the Arts Industries Programme at the University of Hong Kong.

The programme was launched as part of a larger effort to revamp the humanities and currently has about 300 students enrolled, of which 38% are international and from the Mainland and 62% are local.

It offers an interdisciplinary education that connects art with business, culture and technology through areas like Digital Humanities and Film and Media Communications.

A cornerstone of the programme is experiential learning, which includes field trips and internships in Hong Kong, China, Singapore and sometimes Japan.

Professor Choe says that this month, the CEO of Tuyoo Games, a leading gaming and entertainment provider in China, will be kicking off a semester-long hands-on class for students. Some of these students will also be given internships at Tuyoo headquarters.

“And this is just one example of a partnership. Last semester, we wrapped up a project where students worked with Lan Kwai Fong Group Properties, a company with a vast portfolio in commercial, residential and entertainment development.

“The class worked on a speculative student housing project. They conducted surveys and formally presented their findings. It was pretty comprehensive,” he recalls.

Asking the harder questions

For Professor Choe, that practical turn is part of a wider shift in what universities owe their students.

There’s a need for change in the humanities, he says. While a focus on the academic and critical aspects remains important, more attention needs to be placed on how to best prepare students for employment.

He reflects on how things have changed since he was a university student. He sees his responsibility in preparing incoming cohorts for the working world, describing how rewarding it is to witness students who have basically just emerged from “childhood” engage in professional behaviour while also being sincere.

“When I was an undergrad, my advisors weren’t involved in helping me find a job after graduation. For me, it’s a mind shift. I just joined this position in January this year. The intent is to face the challenges head-on while asking faculty to offer courses that provide some clear pathways towards industry.

“Maybe elite universities can be slow to pivot to the needs of the job market. The demand of students coming to, say, HKU or LSE (London School of Economics), can be so high that we think we can continue doing what we do and remain sealed off. But we have to pivot. I’m meeting a lot of people, shaking hands and forging these relationships so we can have a clear pipeline,” he emphasises.

The question is not whether universities should become more vocational, but whether they can make room for practical relevance without sacrificing the intellectual and human qualities that make education valuable in the first place.

For universities under growing pressure to demonstrate the value of what they teach, the challenge may be to ensure that education does not become a choice between passion and practical relevance. The most compelling learning experiences can be those that bring the two together, with help from industry.
