Where heritage meets global ambition
In just over two decades, Oman’s first non-profit university has grown into a leading centre for research and innovation, with international recognition and ambitions that extend well beyond its heritage.

A university born in the heartland
The city of Nizwa was once Oman's capital and a centre of scholarship, trade and faith. The University of Nizwa (UoN) was founded to carry that legacy forward, not to preserve it behind glass.
UoN is a non-governmental, non-profit institution established for public benefit. It was the first university of its kind in Oman. Every rial it earns is reinvested in students, faculty and research, and the university is governed by its own academic community. On 16 October 2004, it welcomed its first 1,200 students.
Today, the university serves close to 10,000 students across four colleges, including international students from 19 countries. It offers various programmes (around 140) across different education levels, including undergraduate, master’s and PhD programmes. Its guiding aspiration is simple and ambitious: to be a beacon of knowledge and enlightenment.
The last five years show what that aspiration looks like in practice: an international accreditation that is a first for Oman, a research output that more than doubled, and a growing record of patents, partnerships and student ventures.
A first for Oman: pharmacy measured against the world
In 2025, UoN's Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) earned international accreditation from the US-based Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). It is the first international accreditation of its kind for a pharmacy programme in Oman, and the first time any UoN programme has reached this level of recognition.
The road was demanding. The School of Pharmacy moved through an honest self-study, several rounds of documentation and external evaluation, and a comprehensive site visit in spring 2025. Evaluators met faculty and students, inspected facilities and tested whether practice matched paper (ACPE).
The evaluation singled out five strengths:
• Qualified faculty ready for a fast-changing profession
• Strong leadership that held focus through a long review
• A student-centred approach that puts patient care first
• A collaborative academic culture across faculty and staff
• Healthcare partnerships, including clinical exposure at Nizwa Hospital
For students, the result is a Nizwa degree benchmarked against international standards. For employers, it is confidence. Dr Salem Al Touby, Dean of the College of Health Sciences, called it "a testament to the dedication and teamwork of our faculty, the strength of our curriculum, and our commitment to delivering internationally benchmarked education".
The accreditation runs through 30 June 2027, and the school is already working a long-term plan for continuous compliance and reaccreditation. A move to a new, state-of-the-art campus will strengthen its teaching and research further.
Research that travels
UoN published 755 research papers in 2024/25, up 28% on the year before and 136% in five years.

UoN Research and Innovation Achievements Report 2020–2025
Every part of the university contributed to these numbers. In 2024/25, the College of Arts and Sciences produced 274 papers. The research centres produced 298, with Engineering and Architecture, Economics, Management and Information Systems, and Health Sciences adding about 60 each. Students were part of the story too: they published 49 peer-reviewed papers that year, 42 of them by postgraduates.
That output is earning recognition. UoN is the highest-ranked university in Oman in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, in the 401–500 band globally. In the QS Arab Region Rankings 2026, it climbed to 58th of 298 institutions, second in Oman and first among private universities.
Individual scholars shine as well. Research awards rose from 20 in 2020/21 to 31 in 2023/24, and several UoN researchers appear on Stanford University's 2024 list of the world's top 2% of scientists.
Built for discovery, connected to the world
UoN has invested OMR15 million in 27 modern research laboratories and major capital equipment. Three research entities give that investment direction:
• Natural and Medical Sciences Research Center (NMSRC) explores natural compounds from Omani plants and marine life for medical use. It is the university's engine of high-impact research and the source of many pharmaceutical-chemistry patents.
• UNESCO Chair on Aflaj Studies treats Oman's ancient falaj irrigation systems as world heritage, pairing history and hydrology to find sustainable answers for water management.
• Chair of Artificial Intelligence Applications develops AI applications and skills for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The DARIS Centre for Scientific Research and Technical Development opens advanced analytical services to students, faculty and industry, tying research to real needs.
Research at UoN is rarely done alone. The university collaborates with 176 research institutions, 163 of them international universities, including Cambridge and Oxford. With NASA, its scientists monitor atmospheric aerosols and their effect on the regional climate.
From ideas to impact
UoN sees itself as a fourth-generation university, where research must create economic and social value. The proof is concrete.
25 registered patents: Faculty inventions range from pharmaceutical chemistry to cancer therapy, advanced materials and food science. Examples include a delayed-release formulation to inhibit SARS-CoV-2, a system for testing a magnesium compound against oral cancer, bio-enhanced food formulations, and chitosan-based films for active packaging. UoN researchers have also authored more than 212 books and book chapters since the university was founded.
A home for founders: The UoN Entrepreneurship Centre helped launch eight student start-ups in 2021–2022. It also produced Oman's national Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) report, placing UoN at the centre of national entrepreneurship policy.
Ten innovation incubators: Student’s "art booths" help turn creative talents into income. In 2021–2022 alone:
• Funun produced 222 artworks and earned OMR 3,110
• Zakhrafa, for Arabic calligraphy, produced 151 works and earned OMR 3,164
• Bunyan delivered real engineering design and consultancy projects, giving students paid professional experience
Looking ahead: a partner for Oman Vision 2040
UoN's next chapter is already under construction. A new campus will give the School of Pharmacy and other units modern space to teach, research and grow. The university's commitment to sustainable development runs through its research, from water heritage to climate science.
Oman Vision 2040 places knowledge and innovation at the heart of the nation's future, and His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has made research and innovation a national priority. UoN intends to be one of the institutions that delivers it: a university where research, innovation and enterprise form a single cycle of value.
For students, UoN offers an internationally benchmarked education rooted in Omani identity. For researchers, it offers modern laboratories and a global network. For industry and partners, it offers patents, analytical services and graduates ready to work.
The University of Nizwa has written several firsts for Oman. Judging by the plans already in motion, it is far from finished.
